Odd characters in text documents from other sources

In sections of text that I copy-to-paste from the internet and/or from e-mail, I sometimes see ” where I would expect to see either double quotation marks or an apostrophe (single quotation mark).

I'd like the document to have regular appearance. I'm thinking, search-and-replace in the word processor could do the trick, but the brains here might have another idea?confused2

Find-and-replace did not give satisfactory results, and I'm having trouble doing it manually. It seems to have something to do with distinguishing between beginning quote and ending quote, instead of the one-mark-for-both system that we old-time typists used to use.:(
