USA FAA Now Requires Hobby Drone Federal Registration

The USA FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has announced new rules that will require nearly all recreational drone users to register them in a national database, in an attempt to ease safety concerns.

The rule applies to owners of drones weighing between half a pound and 55 pounds, and only American citizens will be allowed to register.

The law will require drone owners to submit their names, home addresses, and email addresses to the FAA. Those who do not register their drones will be subject to civil and criminal penalties, according to officials.

Officials said they hope the requirements will encourage users to be more responsible.

“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiast are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely. I’m excited to welcome these new aviators into the culture of safety and responsibility that defines American innovation.”

Upon completion of the registration process, the web application will generate a Certificate of Aircraft Registration/Proof of Ownership that will include a unique identification number for the UAS owner, which must be marked on the aircraft.

Me here: take note that the FAA did not include a requirement for liability insurance (not an oversight I'm positive). Last week a 19 old upstate (CT) lad made a YouTube video of a drone with a homemade flame thrower setup roasting a turkey (elevated on a spit) in a somewhat wooded area in the vicinity of his home with his father in attendance. News article re this individual has not, so far, had any follow up re whether any legal charges will be made; last year this same lad made a video of a drone firing a gun (charges were dropped).

IMO this is a CLASSIC lowest common denominator type response re those individuals in all societies that ruin "it" for everyone else re their don't give a damn (about anyone else but themselves) behavior. The Internet trolls were out in force re the various news/video stories comments section of this flamethrower.

tbh, the lowest common denominator idiot is the one that is going to cause the problem. Does your country have more of them than any other?
