Ghosted desktop icons

I've got two ghosted desktop items that were word files in 2007. I did have three, one being Thumbs.db which has suddenly changed its mind and allowed me to move it to the recycle bin.

All three had 0 bytes and each time I tried to do anything with them I got the message that windows could not read the source file or disk.

I have looked for them in the cmd window directory and they are not there to delete. I have run C cleaner to check the registry and then, grasping at straws, run chkdsk. I have tried clean up desktop items and searched on the internet for ideas.

I don't think they are causing any problems, its just the principle of not finding a way to get rid of them.

Any ideas?

Edit:- Its XP.

Try here .... C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data. Change the drive letter accordingly if your windows is installed to a drive other than c.
You'll be looking for iconcache.db to delete drom

can you right click on them to view the properties of the files, if so, you should then be able to change the attributes to be able to delete them
