The Old Tunnel.

Total and impenetrable darkness.
I cannot see, but I can listen.
Water drips slowly from somewhere.
Unseen, unknown, feet patter
in the darkness.

I cannot see, but I can feel.
Spiders, spinning webs to catch
their prey, touch me softly,
swiftly, silently. Cobweb kisses.
They also wait and listen
in the darkness.

Lichen encroaches,
hanging in slimy drifts,
stinking of decay.
Rails rust, sleepers rot,
rats die and lie forgotten
in the darkness.

Who am I to comment?
I am nothing now.
Nothing but the echo
of the ghost of a dream.
An engineering triumph
going nowhere
in the darkness.

(C) Nimuae 2009.

PS: Blame John-Little for that one !

John-little, the little engine that could.

I think I can,
I think I can,
The age old line he ran
John, the little man
the man who can
lets off steam,
lets out a scream
I'm nearly there, I'm nearly there
No time to spare
No time to swear
My load to bear
My trail to tear
I'm getting there,
I'm getting there
I don't know where,
I don't know where,
But all is well
The peal of bell
sounds the knell
down in the dell
greets a friend
at journey's end.
I thought I could,
I knew I could
And so,
John's story goes.
