Ghostnet, Chinese computer espionage
I heard a story on the radio about Chinese computer espionage. Their endeavor has been known as Ghostnet (or is it Ghost Net?). According to
research by Canadia's counter agents, they have penetrated and/or controlled 1200 computers all over the world. The account said that one of their
methods is to activate a computer's video camera and/or microphone, so that it becomes a surveillence device. If a conversation about military or
economic matters were spoken in the same room as a controlled computer, they had an opportunity to hear the conversation.
I'd heard of tracking a stolen laptop by catching what the camera viewed. But, I had not really thought about the possibilities if a determined
effort were made to capture the computers of government officials in the many countries around the world.
