June Tabor, Mark Emerson & Andy Cutting

June Tabor, Mark Emerson & Andy Cutting
Salisbury Arts Centre
Sunday 22nd September 2008

A lovely gig despite June Tabor suffering from a cold, actually it might have made her normally deep voice a little huskier. Lovely playing from both Mark Emerson and Andy Cutting complimenting her take on mainly traditional songs.
To my mind this is what she does best, much as I like her folk/rock work with such as the Oyster Band, her almost jazz approach to folk music turns what might be a rather ordinary procession of ballads like Lord Atholl's Nurse and more modern classics like Eric Bogle's Now I'm Easy into something rather special. When you add Mark Emerson's arrangements of the music and his and Andy Cutting's easy, unemphatic style the audience is treated to a delightful concert.
A great variety of material, from Robert Burns through Scandinavia, France and Australia to Doc Pomus' Save the Last Dance (done as an encore which non-plussed the audience until she explained the context, placing the song firmly in the canon despite the pop connotations) and back through the roads of Old England, interspersed with instrumentals from John Playford's The English Dancing Master was delivered in a quiet, understated manner. This doesn't prevent her message coming through loud and strong; this is serious music, to be enjoyed yes, but not taken lightly.
