Emergency rescue for pets

I heard this on NBC network news tonight. What happens to pets, in the face of weather emergencies like Hurricane Gustav?

Answer: recent laws require that they be evaculated when their owners are evaculated.

They are electronically matched to ID with their owners. When the owners are evacuated, the pets are put in carry containers and evacuated as well. (In the TV video, they were being transported in an air conditioned truck. It's still not as nice as traveling on the laps of the people they love, but it's a lot better than staying to weather the storm.)

During Hurricane Katrina, when people did not evacuate in advance of the storm, they were told in the late post-storm evacuation that they could not take their pets with them. :( This made a bad situation worse, to be forced to leave behind beloved animals. It also motivated people to try to evade the evacuation, so they could stay with their animals.

Now, people and animals are transported and reunited.
