Pope Benedict XVI in the US

I'm surprised on two fronts:
1 that the rally was so well attended
2 that he publicly spoke about former abuse and how it had been badly handled

Do you think that the bookish Pope Benedict is growing into his role?

I think he's the same man he's always been - but that when he was, as it were, a "man under authority" he did precisely what was wanted of him.

Now that he's in the authoritative role, he seems to have taken a good few years to get the hang of it, and is now fulfilling the role as he sees fit. He's made some mistakes (being human, that goes with the territory) and I may well not agree with everything he does, but I suspected when he was elected that he would do little of note for a couple of years...

Setting aside doctrinal issues (I would not expect someone from my denomination to be elected Pope:o), I expected him to do a good job.

His former position required him to have good judgement in dogmatics, and the teachings are the basis for a Christian's actions.
