ActiveX controls

I note Pancake's advice about disabling unsigned ActiveX controls.

What is the difference between signed and unsigned ActiveX controls?

I ask because I use snippets of javascript in the websites I build which fire off the 'prompt' in IE7; things like 'rollover images' and 'show and hide' scripts. Would these be considered signed or unsigned?

If unsigned then I need to find a way for visitors to my sites to access the information without using such snippets of code.

If I am correct, and Pancake will correct me if I'm wrong. Unsigned stuff has not been through the "security checking" of the likes of Verisign. To have something signed, would tend to indicate that the item is from a known, and trusted, source. An unsigned item may well be fine, but may also have an unwanted payload. In other words, a virus or scumware.
