Rubber rooms for teachers in New York

I've been listening to a radio article featuring various teachers who have been in New York rubber rooms. "The rubber room" is the name for the rooms to which teachers are sent if they are taken out of the classroom. One teacher said that he said a certain unacceptable word, in anger, in class. Another told of a time that, in frustration, he threw a chair. These people are not fired, or given disciplinary actions, or get a pay cut. They are just told to report to a certain address as their new assignment, where they are told to take a seat. You get the same pay, and the same benefits. But you just stay there through the school day.

Some people sleep. Some bring little portable video players. Some organize into little classes; for example, learning Spanish is popular, and it gives the Spanish teacher something to do. There are book clubs. People gossip. They read. They do their bills.

One of the teachers said there is a prison mentality. Sometimes, fights break out.

Some of the teachers are there for YEARS, literally. (Oh, they to get summer vacation. But, they are their whenever they would be required to be in class.) They are teachers, who are not allowed to teach.

The unions are strong in New York, and it is terribly difficult to dismiss a teacher. For many, it is easier to just keep paying them.

Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Hmmmm. does sound quite amazing.

Even in the hay day for unions back in the 60s and 70s and even in the old print days, I dont think you would have had that situation over here.

We tend to be quite sensible now days.
