A pet skunk

Pet skunks are illegal in Illinois and one other state. Skunk farms raise them for pets in most states. A man in Illinois was given one (for a wedding present, as I recall) from another state, but the vet said he could not work on the animal because they are not legal here.

The skunk's name is Penelope. She has a litterbox. She is quite intelligent. She likes to play with people's toes. She is not good at climbing. She is cleaner than the typical cat.

The owner does not want local enforcement authorities to take Penelope, so she has been trained to go to a secret hiding place when she hears the word "stranger." Skunks are quiet creatures, so she is not likely to be found so long as she gets the warning in time.

You can have their gland removed that produces the stinky spray.

However, they apparently remain a tad "musky" smelling.

Sort of like ferrets. (Which I want one of, but Jackie nixed that idea).
