Global warming protests

Climate protests

I heard a report that all the fuel burned by all of the jets taking all of the government bureaucrats to Bali would leave a carbon footprint equal to that of the whole nation of Chad for one whole year. If the work at the Bali conference would be done by teleconferencing with computers, all that could be saved.

But then, the government functionaries couldn't enjoy the hotels, the food, the time away from home, etc.

And teleconferencing leaves no carbon footprint? Why did the choose Chad? Surely they could have been more sensational and said "The entire Western World!" but that would not have been as believable as Chad. This "Carbon Footprint" thing really has me wondering, just how we managed in the days before "Eco Friendly", after all people used to clear a bit of land to plant a crop and keep the cows and horses, they even went hunting and brought home the carcase for tea which was cooked over an open fire. What was not eaten had to be thrown out so, in many ways, was more wasteful than modern society. You get my idea.

Have you ever teleconferenced, scholar?

I have, a number of times.

While it's useful, it's not nearly as useful as being in one place.

Nor is it really possible to have the sort of side discussions that happen at these things, through teleconferencing.

It has its place, of a surety. But it's no substitute for meeting face to face.
