Oprah backs Obama

In Iowa

Should icons with as much sway as Oprah be allowed to endorse presidential candidates?

If they are willing to announce their support, they must also be prepared to declare any other "interest" in the support. i.e. are they being paid for it.

Were it any other media personality, I might be extremely suspicious, Oprah, from my limited exposure to her, seems to be a person of high principals and would be unlikely to offer support in return for "payment" of any sort.

As to whether they should offer support, I feel that we all have a responsibility to ensure that we support that which we believe in and do the best we can to achieve the best results. If we have the opportunity to influence others, if we feel strongly, do we not use it. The only difference is that Oprah has a Television Audience. The only area where we must insist that a person must be impartial and not express personal viewpoints is in the reporting of news.

In general I agree with what you say. My concern about Oprah in particular is that she has the power to make even a book a best seller and getting involved in politics might sway the electorate disproportionately. A vote for Obama may in fact have been a vote for what people think Oprah stands for.
