A public TV station may close

I've heard news reports of a station in the "public TV" network which is overextended financially, and which may close.

The public TV network is a non-commercial network. Its stations cover their expenses and program costs by public donations and donations from companies (which do not get to run ads, but which have their sponsorship of a program mentioned on air), and some money from the government.

A staple of the program schedule is reruns of British shows.

The news reports say the station borrowed millions of dollars , and has not been paying the money back on schedule. If a substantial amount is not paid on the overdue debt, and the rest restructured, a bank will take posession of the station's assets and sell them off .

A word of explanation has been that donations have been harder to come by in recent years. People who were moved to make personal donations to help people after the Sept 11 attack, Hurricane Katrina, and the tsunami, were less likely to contribute larger amounts to less urgent causes, like the TV station.

I would like the finances of public TV to be arranged differently. Enterprises like "Sesame Street" make large amounts of money from their books, toys, and music. I would like to see some of those profits go back into the stations, and I would like the tax money withdrawn.
