The perils of an Ambulance technician (and his family)

My brother in law(and his partner) was sent on a suspected meningitis call. The little girl was from a school that had had several cases.

He was given ( as a precaution) an injection.
He now suffers with flu like symptoms which his wife promptly picked up, she ( or he ) passed them on to various members of the family ( myself. my great niece included) not to mention his partner who has passed them amongst his family.
I am not whining about the flu, but more "what would have happened had it been something more life threatening or sinister" are we prepared for such problems?.

How are doctors and their families protected? Ambulance workers should have the same protections like vaccinations etc.
