The NY Times article says President Reagen spoke of "The Hunt for Red October," his first novel, favorably, and it skyrocketed.
I have read all but his last two novels, I think, and enjoyed them all.
I've seen several of the movies but not read the books. I see that his latest book was written with a co-author which usually indicates an illness.
First class writer shame he died as 66 is not such a great age. I have read most of his books along with lots of Clive Cussler Rip Tom
I've read Clive Cussler, too. But, I found Clancy better. In my opinion, he is the best in the genre he pioneered, the military tecnno-thriller.
Tom Clancy was one of my favourite writers, along with Clive Cussler and Wilbur Smith.
I've read quite a few James Patterson books of late too

"Executive orders" was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
He was scarily prophetic, too, which is talked about, here:
Coincidentally, I'm currently reading "Red Rabbit".
I only read one duffer, by Clancy. SSN.
One report I saw, had the military worried about how he knew so much, he was, apparently, surprisingly accurate.
