Oh, sorry.

Ahem.... set in the near future, Northern America has fallen and is now a dark dystopia. The land has been divided into 12 districts and is governed by the all powerful 'Captiol'. Every year, each district has to send 1 boy and 1 girl aged between 12 and 18 to take part in The Hunger Games - a televised blood sport in which there is only one winner... the Capitol.

It's basically sort of like the movie The Running Man crossed with something like Big Brother (although much better than that makes it sound). Its absolutely compelling, I couldn't put the first book down and then when I finished it I immediately rushed out to buy the other 2.

The heroine of the story is 16 yr old Katniss - a feisty girl determined to survive. And she is a likeable heronie too, not like some other female leads in recent 'young adult' literature.

Anywho, I loved it and the first book has now been made into a major motion picture due out next March. It hasn't been classified as yet and I am hoping that they won't try and pass the film as a 12 or PG13.

We shall see....

Nice review, QOR. Sounds like my kind of book.

Sounds interesting, your Rahness, what sort of age group would you say is the target of the books. The storyline sort of sounds like something a young adult may appreciate rather than those of us who are of a more mellow disposition.

I think the general target audience is indeed young adults but in comparisom to some of the recent young adult type books, this one doesn't talk down to the reader.

But then again, I don't think it really matters who the target audience is supposed to be - if you like the book, you like it. Just look at Harry Potter!

So, it looks like the movie version of this book (out 28th March 2012) is going to be given a USA PG-13 rating. In the UK this can either translate as a 12 or 15. I hope for a 15 rating, as basically the book does involve kids killing other kids for the entertainment of others and if done properly, should be fairly violent and graphic.

Still, very much looking forward to seeing this film. Really hope they have done the book justice. I believe the author was involved with the screenplay, so fingers crossed she protected her original material.
