1,516 mass shootings in 1,735 days: America's gun crisis – in one chart
In Nevada, it seems it's actually legal to buy a machine gun. Now, tell me... Other than killing lots of living things, why would anyone want a
I'm glad America exists, though. That means that there are at least two nations that are more insane than ours.
The automatic weapon that the shooter in Las Vegas used was illegal for anyone outside of the military.
Katzy, why would you say it is legal to buy a machine gun in Nevada?
Associated Press are reporting that an accessory known as a bump-stock was discovered in Paddock’s Las Vegas hotel room, which may have enabled him
to fire into the crowd at near-automatic levels.
AP are citing two officials on the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. They said two bump-stocks were discovered in Paddock’s room, but were still investigating whether they were actually used in the attack.
The accessory works by using a gun’s own recoil to bump against the user’s trigger finger – enabling an increased rate of fire. With a bump-stock, someone can get around restrictions on automatic weapons by firing a semi-automatic weapon at nearly an automatic rate. Previously, the Guardian’s Lois Beckett spoke to firearms expert Massad Ayoob who speculated that a bump-stock had been involved in the shooting.
While automatic weapons are heavily regulated, semi-automatic guns are widely available and bump-stocks are perfectly legal to buy.
The website of Bump Fire Systems advertised the device for $99.99, saying it permitted “simulated full-auto firing” that was “absolutely legal”.
What can I say that hasn't been said here and around the World so many times before? When will they ever learn?
Apologies, Scholar. I thought an AK 47 was a machine gun.
I used the term "automatic weapon" because news reports have mentioned that to be the term for the illegal weapons.
I have now read about the bump-stock, which gives rapid firing without actually being an automatic weapon. Early reports had assumed that an automatic rifle was used because it came to mind due to the speed at which the bullets were fired.
So, I stand corrected by MM.
Katzy, I couldn't tell from your link if the AK-47 was what I understand to be illegal or not. Some people buy guns, legally, that are not set to fire automatically. Then, they buys kits that modify the guns in a way which makes them illegal--but, the gun and the kit were sold separately.
When will the American Pollies grow some gonads and place a ban on the unrestricted sale of fire-arms. I've no problem with anyone (who passes stringent ownership requirements) owning a gun. Maybe even two or three if they are a bona-fide member of a shooting club. But the quantity and types of weapons must needs be regulated.
I signed a friends application for a gun license in my capacity as Trade Union Officer (retired). I wasn't entirely happy about it. Not because he wasn't an upstanding character, but because I sort of feel that anyone who wants to own a gun probably shouldn't be allowed to.
