Monarchy in the UK

Advantages of a constitutional monarchy include:
* a non-partisan head of State who can be "above" party politics
* tradition, providing a symbol for patriotic loyalty and unity
* experience and wisdom built up over generations

Disadvantages include:
* it violates democratic principles as authority is not based on popular consent
* it promotes hierarchy, deference and respect for inherited wealth and power
* it binds nations to outmoded ways and history instead of promoting different/more up to date ways of doing things

So, is it time to get rid of the Royals in the UK?

The bit about authority - does the monarch actually have any, in reality?

If s/he does, then there's a point to that argument.

But I very much doubt that any real authority resides in the monarch anymore...

What do replace them with some tin-pot fuhrer that is answerable to no one . they stop a probable future megalomaniac grabbing absolute power as all legislation has to signed by them to make legal under British law. aka Hitler . Idi Amin. Bokassa etc ad so infinitum.jmb
