I use a lot of IT to support young people in classes. The AlphaSmart was good because it didn't connect to the internet so the pupil was more likely to write without distraction.

Two of our AlphaSmarts were damaged beyond repair and I was disappointed to learn that they are no longer available.

I am therefore looking at tablets that are good for word processing and compatible with PCs for printing work off. I do not want to spend more than I have to so, any suggestions?

Is the alpha smart just a glorified typewriter? Surely you can set up a pc without internet connectivity.

This is a High School though and putting a PC in every classroom isn't as efficient as a lightweight portable device with a full size keyboard which the young person takes to the next class every 50 minutes.

Am I right in thinking that it is a glorified typewriter?

More of a processor with spellcheck, thesaurus etc. and when the device is used to send the document to the PC further editing can be done. Only 4 lines of text can be seen at a time on the AlphaSmart screen which helps ADHD pupils or dyslexic pupils to focus.

Thanks Katzy. Odd "mood" btw.

You know where it's from, I'd guess? I've had my mood set thus since... Heck... must be since I first joined, back in... was it '99?

Apparently, it's mostly harmless. :D

I do, but have never noticed it before. :/

It's become part of the wallpaper. :D
