Had about 45 minutes to kill yesterday in Wausau before Jackie got off work, so I decided to go check out Rookery Island in Lake Wausau (formed by
damning the Wisconsin River just south of where the Rib River converges with it) from the little park next to it.
No sooner do I turn into the parking area then I see these two sandhill cranes

about 10 yards away. They didn't seem too concerned, either, as I got out and walked to the end of the little bump of land.
And it was worth it, because the Great Blue Herons have returned to their nests

This is zoomed in on a small portion of the population of the island.
I'm looking out into the Rib River, which is one of the few areas with open water for these big birds to fish in, and I see a line of Great Blues trying their luck. As I'm looking through the lens, I see a flash of white land among them.
Now I'm thinking trumpeter swan, and I start walking on the side of the road that goes out to the bridge that crosses the Rib, even though it's a 5 minute walk out to the end of the bridge.
It was worth it, because while it wasn't a trumpeter or tundra swan, but a lone white egret out there with the blues.

If I hadn't seen him fly in, I would have probably never seen him.
All I needed was a loon and some other traveler for a Migratory Bird Bingo.
I especially like the first one.
Here's a wider shot of the island, still surrounded by ice. This shows roughly a third of the whole thing.

Remember, each nest represents TWO Great Blue Herons!
I could ~ and HAVE ~ spend all day watching those big beauties fly to and from their nests.

And you can say all you want about the virtues of any organized religion, I'll take MY church services over yours any day.
I understand you thinking, RW. It reminds me of a song that was doing the rounds when I was younger The place where I worship
Great photos - beautiful creatures !
Actually, I should have photographed a robin, which is migratory here, and used the free space for my bingo.
