This thread is so everyone has a place to post their flower photos to and discuss them. It's also a good place for exchanging ideas on how to make
your flower photos better.
This is not meant as a competition, just a gallery. If, for some reason, the photo salon thread has flowers for a theme, it would just be a coincidence for the period of the contest.
Have at it, everyone. You know I will.

As part of our wanderings on Memorial Day we went to Grandfather Dam on the Wisconsin River to see what the rapids looked like. (We were about a month too late for PEAK water flow).
When we were walking up the trail back to the parking area we spotted bunches of these white flowers and I, being the photographic admirer of flowers that I am, snapped a few pictures. Sometimes you get surprised by things in the woods, even in an area you've been to repeatedly for over four years.
This is the best of the take (crop is for an 11x14 print).
[EDIT] For those interested, it's a Trillium (for the three petals). Thanks Dori for enlightening me on the type. It is NOT the endangered Snow Trillium, which only grows in four counties in the southern part of the state.
not the best photo but was amazed at the large cluster

This is what our white trilliums look like,
this is an old photo.
Didn't get any photos of the white ones this year, sorry I missed them since they are prettier than the red ones.
According to the wiki there are between 40-50 species of trillium.
Have topped this thread, along with the bird gallery,
Our first lily to bloom this year (so far)
[bad img]http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a224/redwolf5150/Lilly.jpg[/bad img]
Took about an hour Sunday to go out and properly "harass" the flowers. This is when I go out and spend a little quality time with them using a piece
of foam core as a background and really work the light, etc. to get works of art.
Here's a couple examples of one of our lily varieties that starting blooming recently. Same black background only lit at different angles.

Early morning sun on a partly cloudy day yielded the spotlight effect in both shots.
We added this plant to our garden yesterday
[bad img]http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a224/redwolf5150/Foxglove12009.jpg[/bad img]
It's a foxglove and unfortunately, it's a biannual, meaning it only blooms every other year.
We have several younger versions that won't bloom until next year that we will put in the butterfly/hummingbird garden in a couple weeks when we start working on it in earnest. (We're currently killing the grass where it's going in at with an inflatable pool to keep the use of chemicals down.)
I tried to look at these in Opera, but the images wouldn't load. And I couldn't post a reply. Loverly piccies BTW.
[bad img]http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a224/redwolf5150/73009-1_0045.jpg[/bad img]
Not one of ours. Taken at a bank 1 block from our house. Sometimes living three blocks from the center of downtown has its advantages.
I wouldn't admit to taking piccies at a bank. You might become the prime suspect if it ever gets robbed! At best, they might want to charge you for looking at their flowers.
How do I unwind after a hard Tuesday putting the paper out shorthanded by one person (and still adjusting to wearing contact lenses)?
[bad img]http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a224/redwolf5150/FoldedPinkPoppy7610-1_0147.jpg[/bad img]
I go out in our gardens and commune with the flowers, of course.
How absolutely lovely !
V. nice RW.
Commune away, you have our blessing with photos like that!
Thinking of having an 11x14 inch gallery wrap made of this image (full frame uncropped would allow for the edges).

Have you managed to sell these as gift cards Red? Clinton Cards over here have just been bought over by an American firm so I think there must be a market for nice photography over there?

A happy accident.
For the photographers out there: Canon 40D with a 70-200mm and two closeup tubes and flash set at -1/3 stop utilizing a "Shooter's Stick" with exposure at 1/60th @ f9 and a gust of wind caught the lily just as I tripped the shutter.
For those who like their floral images a tad sharper.

One more poster for the day.
(All four were shot this morning, BTW)
"The flower in the vase smiles, but no longer laughs." ~ Malcolm De Chazal
Which is why I RARELY photograph cut flowers. I like to listen to them laugh as I take their pictures.

Poster created about 20 minutes ago from an image I made July 2, 2010.

Stunning photos - lovely sentiments !
They are lovely.
I, too, prefer living flowers to cut ones. My wife loves having a home with growing flowers in our yard.
To which I reply:

You can't really read them on this small version, but it has the lyrics to the Cat Stevens song "Morning Has Broken" on it. (Which he didn't write, as I'm sure the Brits here know, the lyrics are actually by Eleanor Farjeon and was originally a hymn.)

That last one, RW, whenever I see those lines always reminds me of HAL from 2001.
It's the first two lines of the chorus to "Daisy Bell" written by Harry Dacre in 1892.
It, and it's songwriter, have an interesting history I think you in GB might find interesting.
I'm not in GB! I have a recording made early last century with that song on it. Something in the back off my mind seems to say that I did hear the history at some time in the past. I'll look at your link when time permits.
The creamy peach colored day lilies in Tranquility Bay started blooming this morning.
We ALSO just came back from our two favorite greenhouses with two MORE varieties of day lilies and a most AWESOME variety of oriental lily that are all already starting to bloom. The oriental and one of the day lilies have the most lovely DOUBLE blooms.
I see dragging the studio strobes out this evening after we get the flowers in the ground.

One of our new lilies from last night's "photo session."

A happy accident from an last evening's photo shoot with one of our new lily species. A moth was drawn to the modeling light from the strobe and landed and got a drink. Fortunately, the strobe had recycled from the last shot and I was able to capture this.

Spelling, Jamie, "A raindrop coming in contact with fire loses....."
Sometime today, I will create my fortieth poster design.
WHAT? You think I've been posting them ALL here?
People who follow me on Facebook have access to the entire collection.
It's time to get my hands on a copy of the "2012 Photographer's Marketplace" and start looking for a publisher.
Eorl will like THIS quote I just found by Sam Veda:
“A scholar's fingers, by being constantly engaged in activities, acquire immense capabilities.”
Who says I never say anything nice about him?
A scholar exercises the mind more often than the finger though?
Veda means the following of the words on a page with his fingers as in reading.
But I better be careful here or you will have to take all this talk about Veda's words to the Religion Room.

As a general rule, I try not to repeat quotes or lyrics I've already used. HOWEVER, as soon as I saw this in Tranquility Bay this morning, this song sprang to mind. I had two minutes to get the shot before the light completely changed.
Never turn aside inspiration, I always say.
Type below image
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day.
Repurposed for my Facebook cover photo with something that just popped into my head.

I'd use the version that wasn't accidentally sized for a billboard, most likely.

Starting to experiment with HDR, just to see what I can get.
After a few missteps, computer crashes (HDR files, by nature, are very large and I output my art images by default at 16x24 inches at 400 DPI from the RAW files) and wrong turns, I FINALLY got this image a few minutes ago that I took earlier today.
[bad img]https://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/406075_10151897404555300_1646476139_n.jpg[/bad img]
It's a combination of THREE exposures, one for highlights, one for shadows and one in the middle. While it looks like I used a flash, I didn't.
Shooting in bright sun didn't make my task any easier.
I shot almost everything today like this, so I got more to play with.
THIS one, however, was exposed normally.

It might be a good idea to start a new thread with your contributions every now and then RW. Only 'cause this is taking longer and longer to load with all the piccies, Scholar will have no hope! BUT! Keep 'em coming!
