networking probs.

I've been having intermittent issues with my modem/routers. Half the time I spend looking at my network and sharing centre to see if I can connect to the modem. I even spent an hour on the phone with my ISP last night and got an internet service for the evening. In the morning nothing works again. Stupid thing is, I can't even see the computers on my network. I thought, maybe the router is playing up, so I pull out a spare, and again, nothing works. It seemed to be ok, but no different. Eventually, I pull out another modem and, at least, I now have the internet again. Problem is this modem is still being flaky letting me into change settings. Another problem is that this modem has no wifi, so am now tethered. I still can't see the other computers on the network, but, at least, I can log on here and scream!

Now to a more pressing issue. My temporary modem has only once allowed me to get past the login screen which, permitted me to set up my ISP login details.
The modem is a Netcomm NB6 router that still has all the factory default settings because it won't let me in to change anything. I type in the IP address and am presented with the Username/password screen and then nothing except

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
As I said, only once did I get the next page - i.e. the setup page for my login details. Once they were entered, it managed to save them, but that's it. Any ideas? as there are three other computers on that can be connect on the wired network, but are currently invisible even though they were happily sharing files before my wireless modems fell over.
