I've 'volunteered' to build a website for a local literary festival, this requires a site for the festival, a site for the charity that is a
beneficiary of the proceeds from the festival and a site for the local am-dram (don't ask ). I know I could do it by having a single site and
pointing each of the domains at it but I'd rather keep them separate (at least for the am-dram, there is a justifiable reason for the charity and
festival sharing a site). I also need email and form handling (for the application forms for entries to the short story competition).
Firstly what should I be looking for in a host and secondly has anyone any recommendations?
I don't have web hosting, only a domain name with email and web forwarding.
I used to be with domainsite.com but I left because email forwarding was becoming very slow, and they didn't reply to any of my emails.
I've since moved to ukreg.com and they seem to be good - so far anyway
How long's a piece of string?
Seriously that is one loaded question with no easy answer. Best bet is to do a search and find a few hosters that match what you want and then investigate them and perhaps ask around for opinions.
Apart from the forms and mail, what other requirements do you need?
Do you need databases, do you want PHP or scripting of another kind.
How fast do you want the host links to be, how much are you prepared to pay (or not)?
How much space, what transfer quota do you want, etc, etc ....
Do you want dedicated or shared hosting?
Windows or Unix?
UK, Europe or don't care?
etc, etc .... here's some links to get you started on your hunt.
Personally I use http://www.freehostia.com to do all my "developing with" and then I move it because their servers tend to be pig slow - anyway, Google is definitely your pal here if you choose your search words wisely.
I use DreamHost, they've been very good for my needs, but I had a very good price from them, as I was given a voucher to deduct about $100 off the yearly price...
Does anyone know anything about this:
The company are probably Ok as Sitepoint use them for their 'inducement' to become a host reviewer but what about the package? Would it suit a local sports club with fewer than 100 members who just want a web presence to keep each other up to date, post results and future fixtures etc.
Hey Simon, can you read minds?
That's the one I mentioned above as being £9 for two years. The bandwidth is the only problem for the free web space when you buy a domain name. Too many large images and you could run into problems. But it's where I'm thinking of putting my next possible money maker site. My current money maker site (kidneydialysis in my sig below) has only just got close to what would exceed their bandwidth limit, but if I hosted any images on my main site with its huge bandwidth limitation, I'd get round that problem instantly. Limited space and limited bandwidth are common things with free hosts.
The kidney site (hosted elsewhere - compila) gets over 2000 visits per month now, after the first six months when it was a lot lower, and hasn't quite reached 100Mb a month. So if I put up a new site, I'd have plenty of time to use the free space and watch for a surge of interest. You should look at your own web stats and scale up to see if there is a potential problem. (Although having several separate sites helps me assess things a bit better of course.)
PS Where is the inducement you mention at sitepoint?
That's an individual, not sitepoint themselves. And possibly someone who is part of the free hosting company. But I think I feel a review or two coming on..
Ah, but presumably sitepoint don't have a problem with it or they'd have wiped out the post as spam.
edit: I've just noticed it's in the marketplace forum so wouldn't be considered spam anyway.
No, the post is in an area for trading services - they expect that sort of thing. I've done the odd review for a few dollars, and written articles
for other people ( several hundred dollars!), from ads in the marketplace.
And I look for business ideas in there as well. EG if a type of domain name looks worth a few dollars and I find a similar one is still available, I'm thinking of registering it, then selling on at the same sort of price as the one caught my eye. got two or three in mind at this moment.
Why don't you sign up with the host reviewer's site, and get some free web space for a year.
I've just noticed YOUR edit...
Do we both need our eyes tested?
