A pet skunk
scholar - 9-2-2008 at 14:00

Pet skunks are illegal in Illinois and one other state. Skunk farms raise them for pets in most states. A man in Illinois was given one (for a wedding present, as I recall) from another state, but the vet said he could not work on the animal because they are not legal here.

The skunk's name is Penelope. She has a litterbox. She is quite intelligent. She likes to play with people's toes. She is not good at climbing. She is cleaner than the typical cat.

The owner does not want local enforcement authorities to take Penelope, so she has been trained to go to a secret hiding place when she hears the word "stranger." Skunks are quiet creatures, so she is not likely to be found so long as she gets the warning in time.

Isn't skunks ... smelly?

You can have their gland removed that produces the stinky spray.

However, they apparently remain a tad "musky" smelling.

Sort of like ferrets. (Which I want one of, but Jackie nixed that idea).

Maybe you should get a "friend" to give you one as a wedding present. ;)

The owner of the skunk contrasted them with ferrets, saying that descented skunks have no scent at all. He said Penelope had a "farm" smell when she was fresh from the farm, but it wore off by the third day.

I think I'd be considering a home in another "safe" state.

I think he wants to stay with his wife, property, and job. :D

Skunks are quite romanic, you know. (Until I looked up this picture, I had not known the cat in the cartoon is named Penelope).

Whatever floats your boat Scholar. If you re-read my previous post, you can interpret it in one of several ways. You've just picked on one of them.

Are you suggesting he send his pet away?shocked_yellowshocked_yellowshocked_yellow
She's just a little skunk!

If it saves her life, what would you do? I actually was appalled at the vet who wouldn't treat the animal because it is illegal to own one in the state. He wasn't being asked to own one, just treat it!
