Daughter has finally handed over her old SLR, a Canon EOS 1000D, but I need a lens for it. My main use is likely to be landscapes with occasional macro and snaps. What would you suggest as a good General purpose lens in the short term?

I was thinking along the lines of an EF-S 18-55 but the camera can also handle the EF series lenses. Or would a EF 75-300 USM be better.

How much more versatile would these be compared to the "nifty 50"?
