I'm starting to think you're alright, Jack!

Good possibility that it was done by someone who deeply resented being sent into harm's way as canon fodder (and managed to survive) via a declaration of war by some vainglorious 'leader' whose ego was much, much bigger than his heart. These kinds of monuments are supposedly created to celebrate victory over a foe when in fact the real foe was never in some foreign land.

That statue would have been even more impressive when it was initially installed. It's a pity that someone has chosen to deface it at some stage in its history.

The ditty, Mary, may not be quite accurate, but clever, none-the-less. (I'm not sure that Trump does want nuclear war.)

Trump and Kim like nuclear war
Holocausts leave them in awe
Human rights leave them sore
Each being a dangerous bore

For All The Soldiers All Over The World Who Wound Up In Cemeteries

Attribution: Edgar Lee Masters, Spoon River Anthology

Partial quote from one of its poems:

That to lie under his marble figure with wings,
And this granite pedestal
Bearing the words, «Pro Patria».
What do they mean, anyway?”

Note: the Spoon River Anthology (circa 1916) was once a frequent part of the English literature curriculum in USA high schools; I have no idea if it still is. And I have no idea if it was ever in schools across the ponds.

There are numerous hits (to include interpretations of the prose, critques, etc.), including wikis, about this work via any search engine---Far too many for me to attempt a worthwhile summary of even one.

I have to wonder if Donald ever read it, and in particular this one that I took the quote from.

I agree, it's still very topical.

If anyone has never heard one of this song's many live [album] recordings, or been at one of their appearances, it apparently was often included in their appearances repertoire. As the years rolled by, it would be introduced by one of the members of the group with a comment to the effect of saying 'we've not had to rewrite the lyrics'.

Attribution: Kingston Trio-Song Title: Merry Minuet- Album Name: From The Hungry i (released 1959)

FYI Hungry i:The hungry i was a nightclub in North Beach, San Francisco. Quite a few singers/comics/etc. in the early days of their careers appeared there. It achieved national prominence in the USA especially among the 'in crowd'. Ditto Kingston Trio who with some other groups laid the groundwork in the USA for an "authentic/acoustic" "folk song" era of the 60's to include a good many folk groups from Britain.

They're rioting in Africa,
They're starving in Spain.
There's hurricanes in Florida,
And Texas needs rain
The whole world is festering
With unhappy souls.
The French hate the Germans,
The Germans hate the Poles;
Italians hate Yugoslavs,
South Africans hate the Dutch,
And I don't like anybody very much!

But we can be tranquil
And "thankfill" and proud,
For man's been endowed
With a mushroom-shaped cloud.
And we know for certain
That some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off,
And we will all be blown away!

They're rioting in Africa,
There's strife in Iran.
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man!
