John, there is one role that is critical to the nativity, and if she weren't there, it would never have happened..... As an aside, angels could just as easily been girls or boys, not that I've investigated, but I do suspect that they are sexless, despite the names that they seem to have been given. Remember, also, that women were the home makers in that age, which left it to the men to be the shepherds and the academics.

In the book at bedtime last night, the author mentioned how few rolls there were for girls in the nativity. It never occurred to me before.
