Robot Carried The Olympic Torch In South Korea

Robots are coming for the Olympics.

On Monday, the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s humanoid robot, HUBO, carried the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics relay torch during a stretch in Daejon, South Korea.

HUBO – decked out in an Olympic beanie — received the torch from Professor Dennis Hong, the founding director of the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory at UCLA. The 47-inch tall robot then walked about 500 feet to a wooden wall where it used the drill on its arm to cut a hole and then punched through to pass the flame to its creator, Professor Oh Jun-ho.

Jun-ho then passed the torch to KAIST’s latest robot, FX-2. This massive robot, which weighs 600 pounds and stands over eight-feet tall, was operated by a 14-year-old aspiring scientist.

HUBO was mainly designed for rescue operations. In 2015, the robot won the $2 million DARPA Robotics Challenge, beating out 22 other robots.

HUBO will be one of the 85 “volunteer” robots that will be deployed during the PyeongChang Olympics to help with security, information services and cleaning.

December 12 marked day 41 of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Me Here: a Google type search will yield the usual collection of news stories from a variety of sources, AND ditto re a uTube search (most of which run about 2:30).

Maybe it's just me, but I swear it bears a resemblance to Kim Jong Un who should take notice that in the 2015 DARPA Challenge, HUBO won by default after "it" assassinated all the other competitors [Fake News Alert].

Not sure they quite understand the principle. I mean, I'm not a sporty person but I get the torch being carried by an athlete thing.
