Ruby's HP laptop shuts itself down in seconds

It will come on, lighting up the screen, but then shuts down (dark screen, no wifi button lit) quickly. It reminds me of the way a desktop computer will shut down to respond to overheating if an urgently-needed fan does not run. I think I've heard an electrical sound, sort of a pop, on at least one of the shut-downs.

The battery was around 90% charged when I had last used it. It shuts down with or without the power cord plugged in.

Ruby thinks she can just take it back for refund or replacement. I don't know if it will be that easy.

Any ideas?

Depends how old it is and how long you've had it. But it does sound like a power thing to me. Is the battery loose or maybe the terminals are dirty? I broke the charging socket on one of mine by tripping over the wire when it was plugged in. Does the charging light come on when you plug in the charger?

I did take mine apart to see if I could re-solder the terminals but they were buried too deep to get to.
