30 day Win XP activation notice

A friend gifted me a computer with WinXP on it for the operating system. He had worked on it for someone else who then failed to claim it, so he passed it on to me.

I got it running this evening, and it gave me a warning that I have 30 days in which to activate WinXP on it.

Since Microsoft no longer supports WinXP, I don't know that I will be able to activate it. (Also, it is not hooked up to the internet. I was planning to use it for stand-alone stuff--Word documents, playing music CDs, perhaps watching DVDs when the DISH is not working because of weather problems.)

It has many good software programs on it, which I would hate to lose by formatting the hard drive again.

What do I do about the 30 days activation limit?

Oh--the cmos is displaying an earlier-than-real date. (Like, 2001, I think--I'd have to check.) Might that be related to the 30 days activation limit in some way?

You may have to let the computer go online to activate. Yes, that's right, despite end of support, M$ will still let you activate it.
