Dark amber sunglasses--valuable find, or not?

In a thrift store, I purchased some dark amber sunglasses that have bifocal reading lenses built into them. The amber material seems to be high-quality optical material (not like the $1 plastic sunglasses I usually buy). I'm thinking the original cost may have been $30, $50--who knows how much someone may have paid for these well-crafted sun spectacles with reading lenses ground or molded into them?

But, though they give a darkened view, they don't seem to rest my eyes like the sunglasses to which I am accustomed. This leads me to wonder if they merely have a dark amber tint, but do not have the polarizing feature I find in even cheap Chinese-made sunglasses. The nature of polarization is such that nothing else really matches the effect.

So, I wonder--do I have a real find--perhaps like rich people wore before polarization? Or, is it simply out-of-date--inferior to even cheap polarized glasses? Does a good, dark amber tint do a sufficient job of protecting my eyes?

Do you know anything about this?

If as you say they are bifocal, Scholar, then they must obviously be prescription glasses and the amber tinting could be to relieve a specific condition. Not a good idea to use them if they are not your own prescription - may do more harm then good !
