How do I get mouse functions on a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop?

Stepson started a movie on it and left for the store, without a cell phone, so I can't reach him. The movie reached 38 minutes, then stopped (the screen went blank and the elapsed time stopped advancing). I tried to get it to move forward again, and it went back to the beginning. It is playing from a download to the hard drive.

I've never owned a laptop, and always used mouse or keyboard controls. I can move the cursor to fast forward, but I don't know how to do the equivalent of a mouse click on the fast forward button.

How? Ruby was watching the movie with me and wants to resume where we left off.

Frustration! I tried to get some answers from the internet, but they say things like, "Click on [whatever] to check if X is enabled. . ." I'm trying to find out what you do to "click on" when you don't have a traditional mouse!:(

Step-son showed me how to do it when he got back from walking to the store.

By that time, it was too late for me to see the end of the movie, since I had to sleep.:(

It was Transformers 4.
