Scholar to get faster internet connection--what do I need to know?

On Monday, I'm supposed to get hooked up to a system that will use fiber optic cable to bring me cable TV, fast internet, and telephone service. The salesman said I would be an ethernet hook-up to my computer (which is 2003 BIOS, running XP Pro). The sales rep looked at the back of my computer and said it appears to have the opening to take an ethernet cable.

What do I need to know? How will I expect to connect?

I'm told I will need a router to connect more than one computer at the same time, or to establish a wireless connection for a laptop (if my bride gets one, as she hopes to do).

Surely the salesman should have explained all this and given you literature to read about it?

That didn't happen.

In fact, the rep said she lives in the city, which does not have fiberoptic cable through the nieghborhoods, so she must use something from one of the other companies.

This is very new in our area. We saw the company trucks as the cable was being put in the ground some months ago. Then the sales reps started canvassing the town to get subscribers.
