Locking Windows 7 Desktop Icon Setup

Dear Forum,

I like to set the desktop icons in a certain order on the desktop for ease of use and a system to find, the current set up view for the desktop is small icons, show desktop icons and gadgets, I do not auto arrange or snap icons to a grid. My problem is I do not have a way to lock this icon arrangement as permanent and sometimes they all get moved to the left as if you had auto arrange ticked in the view menu. This I find sometimes is due to the fact that a M/soft update has taken place and a subsequent reboot of the computer, this also can happen at random and I havent been able to associate it with any update etc.

Is there a way of locking the positions of the icons after I have moved them in the order that I require on the descktop, any help or useful suggestions would be most appreciated.

Regards, Miket100

Fences is a great solution. I've always used the free version on some of my machines.

Oops, no longer free, by the looks of it, but, for $9.95, still very good value.
