PDF Read Out Loud help?

Our exam scripts can come in a digital format and students can activate Read Out Loud if they want to check what something says if they have a disability such as a visual impairment or dyslexia. The English papers often have magazine articles or newspaper articles but when one class were practising on the 2010 paper which was a newspaper article it read the top of column 1 then said blank and then read the top of column 2, said blank and continued to do that for all four columns before going down to the second line.

Is there a fix other than getting the text converted to a Word document and then using WordTalk?

Oh! Pooh! I can't offer any suggestions, there, is the document all in PDF? Computers, literal beasties! Could you not just convert it all to a single column and leave it as a PDF?

My work around was to convert it into a single column on a word document but I wouldn't be able to do that on the day of the exam for the number of students concerned and the exam would then start late for those students. The students would then have a legitimate claim that they had done badly because they were stressed, or something.
