Trap for young players

And not so young.......
I fixed a friend's computer on Monday - USB devices not recognised in front USB ports. Turns out that those ports were faulty. OK so we plug in a hub 'round the back and all is well. Fast Forward to yesterday morning, SWMBO gets a phone call after I had left for the city, 'puter freezes on boot.
I finally got there this morning. Sure enough, fozen solid on boot. No beep codes, can't even get into BIOS. Just the word COMPAQ displayed on the screen from the BIOS.
Strip machine down to bare essentials, Ok that works,
Re install items one at a time. So Far So good.
Plug in video card falls over, aha!
Remove video card and plug everything else back in (this worked before, right) Bah!!!
Start again, machine boots fine, but now the moue isn't working. Trace leads out (birds nest under this desk and I find that what I thought was the mouse lead was in fact the USB hub.
Plug in mouse and all is well.
Plug in USB hub and all falls over!
BINGO! Lights go on! OF course, that was the only new thing added!
Put machine back together sans USB hub and all is happy!

NOTE TO SELF, check the obvious first.

Turns out that the machine was trying to boot from a USB stick in the hub. Older machine so no provision in BIOS to do that, so no message on screen to give a hint as to the problem. The hub is fine, just don't leave a memory stick plugged in or you end up in the poo!

Only basic legacy USB, no mention of bootable stuff.
