Is it ever ok to use the N word?
CNN segment
Dr Laura caused outrage in the US when she used the N word several times when in a radio discussion with a black caller who wanted advice about
racism.
| Quote: | CALLER: How about the N-word? So, the N-word’s been thrown around –
SCHLESSINGER: Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic, and all you hear is nig*er, nig*er, nig*er.
CALLER: That isn’t –
SCHLESSINGER: I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing; but when black people say it, it’s affectionate. It’s
very confusing. Don’t hang up, I want to talk to you some more. Don’t go away.
I’m Dr. Laura Schlessinger. I’ll be right back.
After taking a commercial break, Schlessinger resumed her discussion with the caller:
SCHLESSINGER: I’m Dr. Laura Schlessinger, talking to Jade. What did you think about during the break, by the way?
CALLER: I was a little caught back by the N-word that you spewed out, I have to be honest with you. But my point is, race relations –
SCHLESSINGER: Oh, then I guess you don’t watch HBO or listen to any black comedians.
|
Schlessenger went on to use the word many times while asking the question why is it alright for black people to use this term if it is an offensive
one but not alright for white people to use it. She has since apologised - profusely - but the question is now out there being discussed. Why is it
alright for some and not for others to use a word associated with a negative history? Can a word be reclaimed by the group it originally abused?

I think her question is valid. If you are around blacks enough you will hear the N word tossed around quite often. I too have questioned why it is
alright for black guys and gals to use the word but racist when it is used by white people.

As an aside, there are several Airforce One's the presidential plane.
One of them had a call sign of NI 66 ER, ( this call sign is painted on the planes tail fin for recognition ) When Obama became president do you think
this would have had to be changed?
