Free Avast and expiration

I have been using free Avast!

I started to get notices that my free Avast would expire after a certain number of days, with the suggestion that I consider buying the pay version.

Now, the number of days have passed. I find that when I click on "avast shields control," the part that usually tells me the various shields are on is grayed out.

Do I simply choose "update," then "program"? Must I shut down my web browser and downloads before I do so?

I am running Win XP with Opera, if that information makes any difference.:)

You just re-register Avast once the expiry limit has been hit. At least that's been the case for me.

Indeed.

Though since the v5 release I don't know it would work. I'm still on v4.8 Pro version. ;)

When I put v5 on my cousin's laptop last week, I just installed the app, it asked me to register, and I just popped in his email addy. No further input was required at all, IIRC.
