A strange tale of car insurance Part 1

President Obama told this at the health care meeting. Back when he had graduated from college, and was in school for his graduate degree, he had a junky car with cheap insurance. One day, another car rear-ended his. When he called his insurance company to get paid so he could fix the car, they laughed at him. The insurance was only for the sake of meeting the legal requirement to have insurance--they wouldn't actually pay to fix his car.

The point Obama wished to make--he doesn't want to just be able to say Americans have health insurance, he wants insurance that will pay to take care of people.

I would suggest that some "poetic license" was used by Obama, here. If you have full comprehensive insurance, then, yes they wolud fix your car. If you only have Third party property (which is common for those with cheap cars) then, no, they would not fix your car, they would, however, indemnify you for damge that you cause to another vehicle.

A strange tale of car insurance Part 2

Later, someone came up with some questions about this story.

1 Did Obama have collision insurance? There is no legal requirement for collision insurance, but liability insurance is required. Doesn't Obama know the difference?

2 The other car rear-ended his, so the other driver is at fault, and the other driver's insurance pays. Doesn't Obama know this?

3 Obama is a lawyer. Even when he was a law student, didn't he read his insurance contract? Does he sign documents without comprehending them?

4 If Obama knows so little about insurance, how can he possibly think he is qualified to pass legislation taking national control over health insurance?

What do you think? Could Obama really be this ignorant? Or, do you think he made it all up?

(For the record--when Obama was in graduate school, Illinois did not require liability insurance.)
