Prison visits for children

I heard an author on the radio relating how, when he was a child, his mother took him to see the electric chair at one of the state prisons. He didn't remember much about it, but he remembered he had seen it. Later, he learned that the state actually executed the condemned by poison gas--the person was apparently strapped down in the chair before the gas was released.

He once asked an audience, "Who among you was taken to see the electric chair as a child?" Four people raised their hands. All of them were from the South--Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky.

Someone contacted him to remind him that he was not alone when his mother took him to see the chair--the whole Sunday school class was along, and the person was among them!

Are you surprised that such young people are allowed to see the death chair? Did you know children were permitted to take prison tours?

Unfortunately, here in the UK, we don't have death chairs or gas chambers, much is the pity!

If capital punishment was introduced in our schools, society would be a much better place. waggyfinger

Whilst I am of two minds re- capital punishment, I lean away from it, rather severely, there are many other alternatives, but this is not the thread. Depending upon the object of the exercise, and the presentation, a young child may be terrified by the experience, or come away with a greater understanding of man's inhumanity to man.
