I need help--How to fix natural gas forced-air furnace

The electronic thermostat which controls my natural gas furnace is not showing anything in the LCD display. I changed the AA batteries for recently-purchased alkaline batteries, but there is still no display (just blank--no error message or gigo nonsense).

I once took an appliance repair course, and I understand that some of the principles for fixing an oven apply to fixing a furnace as well.

Does anyone have personal knowledge of what to do? Do you know a good web site for instructions? Does the lack of display on the thermostat control tell me the problem is with the thermostat, or might the problem lie elsewhere?

I haven't used the furnace since last spring.

Check to make sure you have the batteries installed the right way round, they need the right polarity, and that the contacts are clean.

Don't know if you'll find anything useful at these links...

http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/

http://www.diyfixit.co.uk/

(Of course, there's always Google to find a USA equivalent...)
