Blown shutter in a 4 1/4 month old camera!



I was shooting fireworks last night with my 40D I bought in Mid-February and got the dreaded Err 99. Switched batteries, switched lens, cleaned contacts, etc. Nada!

Now I have to argue with Best Buy (I was smart and bought the extended warranty) as I have a HUGE festival to shoot in less than 2 weeks and I really don't want to do so with my four-plus year old back-up body.

What is with Canon these days? A camera can't even go five MONTHS without messing up? I remember the old F-1, A-1 film cameras that I used for YEARS and the shutters never blew! This thing is supposed to be warranted for 250,000 clicks! Doesn't Canon give a rodent's rump about their reputation any more, what with the problems with the EOS 1D Mark III and even some of the first 40D's having a focus problem???? (I know a rodeo shooter who won't upgrade from the 20D because of the reputation of the 30 and 40D.

If I was not so heavily invested in EOS lenses I'd be looking to switch to Nikon right about now. I just might start looking into switching.

Just venting, but this sucks like a HOOVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You spend $1,500 on a camera body you should get RELIABLE performance for that much money!

We're getting ready to go into Wausau to the Best Buy there and I will NOT be happy unless I leave there with a functioning camera body. I have an email into Canon's tech support very strongly voicing my displeasure with this SHITuation! I have used their gear -- and been a very loyal and vocal supporter even recommending it to others -- for 30 years. How they handle this will determine if I remain so.

If you all see my avitar change to a anti-Canon logo, you'll know why!

I have been warned away from Best Buy because of problems in returning merchandise, Red Wolf, but those who gave warning weren't talking about a purchased extended warranty (just the off-the-shelf, cash register receipt return).

I hope all goes well for you. A camera should, indeed, last longer than that, especially for that much money.kewl_glasses

They had to send it in for repair.

No loaner camera, either. Their "Best" solution was they'd let me buy another one then return it when the other is back from the shop.

Like I have $1,500 this close to Rock-fest.

There is a slight chance they will get it it back before I leave. The store in Stevens Point is pulling every string they can.

The store in Wausau was useless and very rude. I'm calling their corporate offices on Monday and throwing a royal fit over how they treated me. It will be a cold day in the nether regions before I set foot in that Best Buy again.
