Dave Swarbrick

Last night MrsSRD and I went to the Arc theatre to see Dave Swarbrick. An amazing folk fiddler who has played with many of the greats of the scene, including Martin Carthy and Fairport Convention. He has been seriously ill with emphysema and had a double lung transplant in 2004, but he is back on his feet and on the road. Youtube has lots of his stuff.

Ably accompanied by Kevin Dempsey (another member of Swarb's Lazarus) except on one set of tunes that KD hadn't heard let alone learnt, as well as playing on his own, Swarb kept us enthralled with his playing, how he can create such fire with such an easy action is amazing, and entertained with his frequently scurrilous tales of his life as a folk musician. An amazing man and a fine musician.

A double lung transplant!

I wonder if he smoked (cigarettes). Or whether this was another example of playing in smoke filled rooms for years.

Definitely smoked, and anything he could lay his hands on, he tells a lovely story from the Fairport days of staying in a hotel in the States; for some reason he was given a suite, a nice big sitting room with a drop down bed for the roadie and a big bed room for Swarb. After a particularly strenuous gig and a fair amount of substance abuse, he fell asleep only to be woken in the middle of the night by another member of the band hammering at the door with 'something important to tell you.' after telling him impolitely to go away Strawb fell back to sleep. In the morning he awoke, and stark naked with a particularly large joint in his mouth, strode through the doors leading into the sitting room and demanded "Has anyone got a light for this?". He then notices that the sitting room has been turned into a conference hall with 50 or so 'suits' staring open mouthed at him.
