Retired chimpanzees

I have just heard a radio article about chimpanzees, who are typically not put down after they are no longer useful. Instead, they go into retirement.

Cheetah, the chimp from the Tarzan movies, is thought to be about 75 years old. (When the article was recorded.) He drinks ice tea and eats snacks. He likes to pound on a piano from time to time. He watches his old movies on TV and recognizes scenes that he did, and applauds.

One retirement environment for chimps includes a forest with fruits and berries, so they can look for that kind of food, and get exercise climbing. However, they come in for the three balanced meals they are used to getting. They watch television. Their favorite show--no kidding--is "General Hospital.":o

Chimps are good for movies and more easily managed when they are young. Their careers last no longer than 4 or 5 years. An adult chimp is four or five times as strong as an adult male human, so they are too dangerous to have around if there is a chance that they won't behave as desired, but may instead act in a way to harm someone.

Of course, in the UK we actually trained chimps to talk and these talking chimps appeared regularly in adverts for typhoo tea.

I couldn't see any of them doing any harm, specially with their yorkshire accents.

The piece also mentioned that, under the Clinton administration, chimps were acquired for AIDS research. This proved to be an embarrassing waste of money, because chimps don't get AIDS.:o One of the last acts of the Clinton administration was to establish a retirement home for these chimps, since they were of no use for research in a disease they could not get!
