Todd Stroger fights for the highest sales tax in the country
The Cook County Board President, Todd Stroger, has been pushing to increase the county sales tax from .75% to 2.75%. Opponents on the board held it
to 1.75% instead, and Stroger had to give up control of the country hospital system.
Stroger is widely criticized for padding the county payroll with friends and relatives (for example, he has 5 public relations staffers, some of whom
are not allowed to talk to the press).
The hospitals are run so incompetently (in terms of finances) that many millions of dollars' worth of services are never billed. That's right--in
many cases, the hospital doesn't even ASK the patients to pay what they owe.
Is it surprising, then, that paients who are not told how much they owe, don't pay for the services they've received?
