Srinivasa Ramanujan

Briefly, he was a genius Indian clerk who had a wonderful mathematical brain. He died aged only 32. His particular area of interest was prime numbers.

The Indian Clerk, by David Leavitt tells his fascinating story and it has been suggested that he could be a role model for those who are afraid of numbers and mathematics.

My eldest son would have dearly loved to emulate him. On his graduation from high school the head of maths made this observation "This student has done more maths subjects than I knew existed in the curriculum!" He loved maths and was voted to be the nerdiest kid in school. The fact that his class mates chose that honour for him, sort of belies the title as he was also well liked.

I forgot he was referenced on Good Will Hunting as well. My friend who did study mathematics at university reminded me last night.

Has your son been able to study maths further since he left school Leigh?
