Red Shoes

Red Shoes

Five years old, and all I want in life
is a pair of bright red shoes,
but mummy says I am far too young
to be allowed to choose.
So, black it is, for everyday
and white to wear on Sunday !
At least I can have my dreams,
I’ll have the red shoes - one day.
Ten - and Santa Claus has left an oblong
box with the message “Happy Yule”,
it just has to be red shoes ? No - dull,
uniform brown for grammar school !
Older - I join a dancing class,
surely now I will have red shoes?
No - the chorus all wear black,
only soloists get to choose.
So I tapped, I jazzed, and I jeted.
I worked at every kind of dance
then, with a production of “Hunchback”
at last came my big chance
with the role of Esmeralda. A
solo. That meant that I could choose ?
Not really - for she was a gypsy
and she didn’t wear any shoes !
Now - here I am at last,
a serene smile upon my face.
Flowers braided in my hair,
dressed in cream satin and fine lace.
Surely now, at least, my choice
of red shoes would be allowed ?
No - it seems that white socks
are all one wears beneath a shroud !

Oh, that pulls at my emotions.

When I was a child, I dreamed of being able to buy as many comic books as I would wish.

In my adult life, my wife handled our family finances, and regularly spent more money than my income, so I could not buy comic books.

I hope to be able to buy comics, as I always wanted, some day.

That is so well thought out, I feel it is something we can all identify with.

How good is the mind at projecting childhood desires into our adulthood? ( albeit retrospectively).
Its nice to have a yearning even if you have no intention of fulfilling it, it helps to keep you mentally agile as you project senarios of what might have been.

Another fine work Nimuae.

What lovely comments. Thank you both very much.

Another goodun, Nim!

Just a minor point, if you've retyped it for here, that may explain the oversight.

The fourth line surely should be choose and not chose.

I said it was minor, if it's a c&p of your original, it just may save some embarrassment.

Ooops - thank you - for spotting the typo. I cannot edit it out though, Maybe a friendly Mod might oblige ?

Dun! Was it just here, or also in your source document as well?
