Sad to say, but I knew this would happen when she returned to Pakistan. The Taliban would never allow a strong woman in that country to live long.

To paraphrase a couple lines from a very lovely song by Don McLean:

"But I could have told you, BENAZIR,
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you"

Pakistan has been a powder keg with a short fuse for a long time,
It could be that the fuse is now lit. the west could have another conflict to stick thier nose in???

I heard an expert on a newstalk program describle the best news--Pakistan had U.S. help in setting up the command-and-control for Padistan's nuclear weapons. THEY ARE SAFE. To be used, the three components, which are kept in three separate locations, must be assembled--and only a few people in the whole country even know those three locations.

Two bad outcomes which are possible, according to the expert:

1-Islamic terorists could get possession of radioactive materials and make chemical bombs which would disperse the radioactive material.

2-If the present leadership seems likely to topple, and if the country appears ready to descend into chaos, a number of Islamic generals could stage an Islamic coup and establish an Islamic State (perhaps similar to Iran). (Most everybody follows Islam in Pakistan, I think. The question is, how do they think it should be reflected in their state, laws, and culture, and their plan toward Islamic terrorism.)

It wont be long before Bush puts on his "John Wayne" outfit, rides off into the sunset trying to prove "he's the daddy" all over again. More young blood spilt?

No, I don't think so, Bear. Pakistan has been an allie.

This is Punisher's country. I wonder what he has to say on the subject.

I hope nothing I have said about the dangers seems insulting to his people. Naming the worst possible dangers does not mean I expect them to happen, just that I think the U.S. leaders will have them in mind, to help avoid them if possible.

World reaction--quotes

As horrible as this is for Pakistan, I wonder if it (or leaders invoking it) will inflame destructive passions in other countries?

Any death is sad - but this one in particular is so. :(

LSemmens - 28-12-2007 at 12:51

Why is it that these countries all around the same geographic locales, all seem to be very close to anarchy.

the bear - 28-12-2007 at 21:25

The word on the wire is that Pakistan could now be headed for "civil war". Only time will tell!!!!!!

ABC news has reported in its Nightline program that the government has restricted the Internet. Technically, would that only mean that ISPs have been shut down? (=no internet service). If one can get on, I don't know how there would be any real control over what information would be exchanged.

It might be that the Punisher won't be able to reach us for a while.:(

Tonight's NBC News mentioned that she had more security protecting her, but that there was an attack a little earlier on another politician and his people. Some of those men left to help deal with the earlier attack, leaving her with fewer people protecting her. In hindsight, it looks as though the earlier attack was a diversion, and it succeeded.

Bhutto was in an armored car. If she had not extended herself through the sunroof just then, she would probably be alive today. But there is the problem everyone faces: if you stay safe, the people whom you wish to help cannot reach you, either.

I am probably not the only one who has marveled that no one has shot or bombed President Bush.

Don't even suggest that scholar, there are enough loonies out there to try.
