My wife proposed getting me a new computer for my birthday (on Christmas)

The present desktop system is ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI, an AMD processor unit running XP with at about 3 GHz, RAM is 2 Gb.

How much improvement in speed would I get from a new machine? (I'm thinking low-end, not a high-end gaming machine).

I mostly do internet, including streaming videos, and office work.

Would a new processor and new product Bus speeds, hard drive, and optical drive be noticeaby faster? Or, has performance leveled off in the past few years?

Does bloatedness of newer OS weigh a computer down so as to negate faster hardware?

I'm thinking free browsers and word processing programs would cover my basic software needs.

What do you all recommend, if you think a step up is worth it? What specs should I look for?

Or, should I go with improving memory on what I have?

The problem is, although processors and memory etc have speeded things up, Windows has used all that power to slow things down again!

But computers are so much cheaper these days and if you bought an almost up to spec one, it might be quite cheap.
